Packing Installation Best Practices
Packing is constructed of relatively soft materials that are inserted between the rotating shaft and the body of the pump casing. During packing installation, best practices should be followed. The tightened gland against the outboard ring transmits pressure evenly to the entire packing set. This pressure expands the rings radially, creating a seal.
However, the packing must be installed correctly. This means that the packing is correctly seated and fully loaded. Properly installed packing forms an effective seal. Leakage will be less than 10 to 12 drops per minute of shaft diameter.
